Interoperability in Higher Ed: IMS Global Announces 800lb Gorillas All Aboard

IMS Global put out a press release that SunGard is now willing to publicly and proudly stand with Oracle and tout the advantages of cooperating with the Open Standards movement.  This is important because together these two member organizations, by far, make up the lion’s share of the SIS market, which is the primary administrative tool with which one might want to interoperate.

In plain English, the IMS Learning Information Services (LIS) Open Standards “help enable flexible integration across a wide variety of enterprise applications. This includes student systems and learning/course management systems as well as hosted email/collaboration suites, communication platforms, web-hosted learning applications, web-hosted audio and video lecture platforms, classroom capture and homework systems, and other applications commonly used in teaching and learning.”  This is a significant step towards focusing efforts on effectively using IT tools, rather than laboriously developing and maintaining many different integrations separately.

Shout outs to Michael Feldstein and Linda Feng of Oracle and Chuck Severance and everyone else at IMS Global for working so hard towards this goal.
