Is this a time sink? Is this going to hurt? I don’t like needles….

Facebook in Higher Education: Involvement Meter

At Inigral, we respect the fact that we’re building an online community and tools for some busy folks.  And, I hear the bruised and battered mentality all the time left over from your last big technology implementation.  But, we know at Inigral the only way we can succeed is if we are introducing something that’s delightfully easy to implement, deploy, launch, and maintain.

One of the most frequently asked questions we get is:

I like this Schools on Facebook thing.  But….how long is this going to take?

Short answer

This will be the easiest implementation you’ve ever done AS LONG AS YOU LAUNCH!!!!

Longer answer

There are three aspects.

  1. There’s the technical implementation, which we can get done in days but might take your organization some time to prepare.
  2. There’s coordinating seeding content, which is not so much time as it is herding some student and staff cats.  We do the training.
  3. There’s developing a communications strategy to launch, during which we help you with all the creative elements you need.  But success really depends on executing a good project plan and going through with Launch.
  4. Management.

I emphasize the need to Launch so much because any social network increases in value the more people are on it.  It’s vital that you hit a critical mass.  If you don’t, no matter what product you’re using, the users are going to find less value in it.  Then you will have to re-launch, which will be double the communications work.

Then, of course, there’s management.  Schools on Facebook is designed to run on its own, but you can always get involved.  Through our code of conduct and constant reminders, we help shape a positive culture. Negative content gets flagged by users quickly, and student administrators can easily remove and prune content.  However, if you want to get involved, there’s lots of things you can do to help make your app succeed!  It’s really up to you.  We’ll share best-practices, but operating an online community is not a one-size-fits-all model.  We will work together to do what’s best for your campus.
