What Facebook for iPhone 3.0 Means for Inigral
By now, every Facebook user with an iPhone probably has Joe Hewitt’s latest creation: Facebook for iPhone 3.0. It’s a beautiful application, with a totally revamped interface and functionality. Several noteworthy features were launched including a new home screen which will offer the ability to customize (i.e. adding boxes to the default start screen), a better ‘News Feed’ (a [...]
NC State is Ahead of the Game on Twitter!
By now, many schools have joined the Twittersphere, using the tool to help broadcast campus news, post athletics updates, and even promote themselves to prospective students. It’s a great place to reach a wide audience, easily, and start some really important conversations.
Facebook Profiles as Acceptance Criteria
Since Facebook opened user profiles to the public in 2006, there has been much debate around whether Facebook profiles are an appropriate face for college students to show to admissions counselors and potential employers.
7 Things You Didn’t Know About NACAC 2009
As a result, we were very excited to attend the 65th annual NACAC conference this year. And yet again, it proved to be a great opportunity to learn, share, and connect with familiar and new faces. Here are seven things that caught our attention as a re-cap of this year’s admissions powwow.
Build Communities That Will Last
Student retention is a growing concern for colleges and universities throughout the United States. With decreasing endowments, every student that pays tuition every year brings the campus valuable operating funds, not to mention a more vibrant community.
Engaging Alumni Using Social Media
In a Mashable article that was recently published, called “10 Ways Universities Are Engaging Alumni Using Social Media”, a number of colleges and universities were highlighted for their social media efforts. Schools were selected for different uses of strategies and tools to reach and engage the alumni community, and the same three seemed to show up repeatedly: Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
Easily Build Your PLN and Your Knowledge
Personal Learning Networks, or PLNs, have been around forever. Originally, they were your family and friends, maybe people you worked with, but as the internet and web 2.0 tools have become nearly ubiquitous, PLNs can include tons of different communities – social networking sites like Facebook, blogs, Twitter, nings, social bookmarking tools, LinkedIn, and so many more. Basically, anyone that you [...]
Using Facebook to Teach History
A friend recently contacted me about an idea she had to use Facebook to teach history, by having students pick political thinkers from the enlightenment to today and have them friend each other and talk.
Inigral Speaks at Facebook HQ
Last week, we were invited to Facebook’s headquarters in Palo Alto, CA to present on how we’re changing the way higher education uses social media. It was very informative both for us to hear from the creators of Facebook’s platform on how Schools on Facebook was the type of application they envisioned being used when it was first built.
Thoughts on Social Media Being Banned From College Stadiums
Jack Welch said that when the rate of external change exceeds the rate of internal change, your company is on a road to death. Controlling threats will buy you time. But ultimately, it will lead to death. The story “Social Media Banned from College Stadiums” is another small chapter in Higher Education’s relationship with Social [...]
Social Media in Higher Ed, a How To
I recently undertook the task of coming up with the simplest possible Social Media Strategy for Higher Ed. Easy to memorize and implement, it consists of finding conversations, hosting conversations, and participating.
Of course, for most that wasn’t really a manual they could sink their teeth into, so after having a lot of conversations I came up with a more robust set…
How will today’s students use the web of tomorrow?
Last week, our CEO Michael Staton was on a panel during Internet Week New York, called “Beyond Facebook: How Will Today’s Students Use the Web of Tomorrow?” Hosted by Mark Moran of FindingDulcinea, the panel included 4 other executives of interactive online educational tools.
The Next Phase of Social Media: Facebook Platform Finally Realized
It wasn’t always the case when a company could execute a business plan that was solely revolved around another company’s platform. And then there was Facebook. With over 225 million members, and over 500,000 registered developers, the platform has become a sustainable ecosystem for garage start-ups with two people (such as Sticky Notes), or companies with over 100 employees (like Zynga). A recent post on VentureBeat showed that these developers could generate over $500M in revenues this year, which puts the platform on an even playing field, if not greater, than Facebook itself.
NACAC on Social Media in Admissions
This week, the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) reported it’s findings on the use of social networking in college admission processes. As expected, the report displayed a blanket increase of the use of social media within the college admission process.
Facebook Strategy for Higher Education
There’s a lot of conversation about Facebook Strategy in Higher Education. However, Social Media is less about strategy than about community and copresence. So, the first element of your strategy should be start now, worry about strategy as you move forward.
