Facebook Developer Conference Three Key Takeaways
For the first time ever (last month) Facebook had 500 million users in one day.
1. Facebook is launching a redesigned profile called Timeline.
The marketing is around “All your stories. All your apps. Express who you are.” The original profile focused on basic stats, but it was really only the first five minutes of a conversation. The profile then moved to “recent” activity, which might be another ten minutes or so of a conversation with somebody. You will be able to add memories to Facebook at any point in the timeline. With this upcoming launch, Facebook is trying to bring forward the most important moments of your life at a single click. It’s profile’s rethought from the ground up.
2. Applications will be more prominent in the Facebook experience through their technology protocol Open Graph.
Once you authorize an App, that App will always be able to send “reports” to Facebook using “templates” – a summary of activity that might be interesting enough to place prominently on your profile. The example they used is Running, using an App built by Nike. Nike’s running App tracks your runs, and publishes a monthly summary of your routes and your stats to the Facebook Timeline. Apps will also be able to use their own verbs, which doesn’t sound important but it is. Up until now, you could only “like” something. Now, Apps will be able to define your relationship, so that Facebook can now capture your relationship to anything and the type of relationship as well. So, you can “read” a book or article, or “watch” a movie, or “learn” content.
3. Success = sorting relevant information from real-time information
To that end, they are launching the Ticker, which will be available in the upper right hand of Facebook. The Ticker will be small stories happening in real-time, allowing what Facebook is calling “realtime serendipity.” The example given was listening to a song in Spotify, which will create a story in realtime. If your friend is listening to a song, you will have the ability to “join in” on listening to that song, even at the precise moment your friend is listening. You will also have the ability to do this in television shows, movies, and news and magazine articles.
